PRESENTATION OF RESULTS FROM THE REGROWCITY / URBACT NETWORK
On May 18th during the Show Case Meetting the results of the ReGrowCity / URBACT network will be publicly required. The event will take place via an online platform.
The Architect José António Lopes is the coordinator of the working group of Re-grow City Urbact through which the project Melgaço Tem Pop-Up was born, a success story throughout Europe and which revolutionized the village of Melgaço.

It started in 2019 and, since then, 13 projects have been implemented, six of which have become the definitive store, with four new applications already being applied.
This project to boost the local economy was born in Altena, Germany, and has a partnership with Melgaço, in Portugal, Idrija, in Croatia, Nyirbator, in Hungary, Aluksne, in Latvia, Isernia, in Italy, Manresa, in Spain, and Igoumenitsa, in Greece.
«It was very successful. It took a lot of work and demanded a lot from everyone, but there was a lot of involvement from society and this generated a climate of confidence and optimism, which remains to be done. », said the architect José António Lopes.
The main goal is to revive urban centers that show a prolonged decline because of the lack of commercial animation and reverse the loss of population. The strategy thus involves the temporary occupation of vacant commercial spaces. By adopting common measures, cities are finding solutions, together with the community, to reverse the loss of population.
